Introduction

There are a lot of small and fragile pieces within the door mechanism, be cautious not to damage or drop anything within the door. Any damage caused to the inner mechanisms of the door could potentially create a more expensive problem to your rear door.

Be careful when removing the door cover to not pull too hard. There are plastic door clips on the other side that could break with enough stress enacted upon it.

What you need

Step 1

              Rear Door Latch

Remove the Phillips #2 screws holding the window actuator mount to the door.
Place a wedge (or your finger) under the top part of the door cover. The cover will pull right off when all the clips are unlatched.
Be careful not to pull too hard, as the plastic could crack.

Step 2

Once the top cover is off, remove the screws holding the lower door card on with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
Once the lower door cover is removed it will expose the weather stripping.
Carefully pull the stripping back from the hinge corner depending on which door you are repairing.
In our case, it was the passenger rear door, so we pulled the weather stripping down from the top left corner to expose the latching mechanism.

Once the top cover is off, remove the screws holding the lower door card on with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Once the lower door cover is removed it will expose the weather stripping.

Carefully pull the stripping back from the hinge corner depending on which door you are repairing.

In our case, it was the passenger rear door, so we pulled the weather stripping down from the top left corner to expose the latching mechanism.

Step 3

As you can see here, the black cable in the back is worn and off of its track, this is the part we are replacing.
These are Dorman cable latch replacement fittings. Total they cost 12$

Step 4

Take a pair of pliers and press on the halves of the fitting on the bracket.
Push the fitting through to release the cable clamp from the bracket.
You can pull the cable around the top to get a better view.

Step 5

This is what wear on the cable looks like. This is the source of our problems.
The fitting has a groove through the middle of it.
Slide the cable through the middle groove so that it is seated in the fitting.

Step 6

Press the fitting back into the bracket and grab it again with the pliers to make sure that it is seated properly.
Slide the bottom ridge of the fitting onto the bracket. You will see it positioned like this.
Test the door handle to make sure that the door opens and closes.

After the latch is fixed, test the door again and then follow steps 1 and 2 in reverse order to return the door back to working order.
