Introduction

Before beginning, make sure to disconnect the car battery to avoid a short circuit. Only reconnect the battery following step 7. Avoid touching the bulb with your bare hands as the oils from your hands can cause the bulb to degrade faster or shatter.

What you need

              Dome Light               
  • Before replacing the dome light and to avoid a short circuit, disconnect the car battery first.
  • Open the hood of your car by pressing the front latch and lift the hood.
  • Carefully attach the hood strut, (located towards the left of your car’s engine), into the slot to hold the weight of the hood.
  • Disconnect the positive terminal of the battery in order to avoid short circuits.

  • Use a spudger and insert it into the space between the dome light cover and edge.
  • Gently pry the cover off but be careful that you don’t break any of the clips attaching the cover to the assembly.

Step 3

  • Evaluate if the bulb is just loose or if it has burned out and needs to be replaced.
  • In this case, you can see that the bulb has turned black from the inside, indicating it has shorted out. This bulb needs to be replaced.

  • Use the spudger to detach the bulb from one end of the socket.
  • Pull the bulb out of the socket with the end that is loose.

  • Align the new bulb with the socket and push it back into place.
  • Ensure the bulb is connected to each end of the socket or it will not function.

  • Before attaching the cover of the dome light, reconnect the car battery carefully and test the light to make sure it works.
  • Align the tabs on the dome light cover with the holes in the assembly and push the cover back into place.

  • You should now have a functioning dome light.
