Introduction

Note: This procedure is done on a 2007 Silverado WT with a 4.3L V8 engine. Your specific model may vary slightly.

What you need

Step 1

              Open the Hood

Make sure the engine is completely turned off and the key is out of the ignition before beginning.
The hood release handle is located on the driver’s side to the left of the emergency brake pedal.
Pull on the hood release handle to pop the hood.
To open the hood, reach into the gap at the front of the truck and feel for the latch in the middle. Push it to the left to release it and lift up on the hood.

Step 2

              Locate the Battery Compartment

The battery is located in the back left corner of the engine bay, partially covered by an engine bay brace.

              Remove the Engine Bay Brace

Remove the four bolts holding the engine bay brace to the body of the truck with a 13 mm socket and socket wrench. Remove the brace and set it to the side.

              Remove the Battery Hold Down

Locate the battery hold down, which is a small block held down on the right side of the battery compartment.
Use at least a 6-inch socket wrench extension to reach the 13 mm bolt and loosen it up.
Once it’s completely loosened, reach down and pull out the bolt and the battery hold down block.

Step 5

              Remove the Cables from the Battery Terminals

Locate the red positive cable and the black negative cable, both of which need to be removed using a 10 mm socket.
Remove the black negative cable first (and reinstall it last), which will prevent the possibility of shorting the battery to ground.

Step 6

Loosen the 10 mm bolt on the black negative terminal just enough so you can lift it up and remove the cable.
Push the cable back and out of the way. A simple trick is to rest it on one of the engine bay braces to keep it from springing back.

Step 7

Flip up the terminal cover on the red positive terminal and loosen the 10 mm bolt.
Lift up on the cable and move it out of the way. Resting it on the coolant reservoir keeps it from springing back.

Step 8

              Remove the Battery

The battery may have carrying handles that you can flip up if they’re not already.
Grab onto the handles with both hands and slowly lift the battery out of the battery compartment.
Batteries are very heavy (around 40 lbs.), so make sure you’re able to safely lift the weight.

Follow these instructions in reverse order to install the new battery and reassemble components. Make sure to connect the black negative cable last to prevent shorting the battery to ground.
