Introduction

What you need

Step 1

              Oil and Oil Filter               
  • Drive slowly onto ramps to prop up your Subaru Legacy.
  • Don’t forget to turn on your parking break and block the rear wheels with wheel chocks or 2x4 wood blocks.
  • Align the oil pan on the Legacy with the oil pan you’re using to collect the oil being drained.
  • Place newspaper around the pan to catch spatters.

Drive slowly onto ramps to prop up your Subaru Legacy.

Don’t forget to turn on your parking break and block the rear wheels with wheel chocks or 2x4 wood blocks.

Align the oil pan on the Legacy with the oil pan you’re using to collect the oil being drained.

Place newspaper around the pan to catch spatters.

Step 2

  • Loosen the drain bolt with your 17mm socket wrench just enough to where you’re able to loosen the rest by hand.
  • Remove the bolt and washer by hand to allow the oil to drain into the oil pan.

Step 3

  • Once your Legacy is completely empty of oil, clean off the bolt and washer and tighten them by hand until you can’t turn it anymore.
  • Turn the bolt another 1.5 turns with the 17mm wrench.
  • Do not over-tighten the bolt.

Step 4

  • On a 2013 Subaru Legacy the oil filter should be by the battery. Loosen the oil filter by hand if possible. If not, use an oil wrench or a crescent wrench to loosen it.
  • Be cautious while removing the oil filter to ensure you won’t spill any oil.
  • Clean the tray around the oil filter after you remove it with a paper towel.

  • Rub a little bit of the new oil you bought onto the new oil filter’s gasket.
  • Screw on the new oil filter by hand until it is tight. You don’t have to use the wrench to tighten the filter.
  • The type of oil filter required for your Legacy should be listed in the owner’s manual.

  • Fill your car with the oil mentioned in your owner’s manual.
  • The owner’s manual should mention the type of oil as well as the amount needed for your engine.

  • Remove the dipstick and clean it. Then reinsert it and remove it again and ensure the second dot on the end of the dipstick is touched by oil.
