Laptop starts, but the screen doesn’t turn on.
If the RAM is not properly seated on the motherboard, you will need to reseat it. To do this, take off the backplate and unplug the RAM from the motherboard. Next, plug it back in, pushing until the RAM stick clicks into place.
Non-functional memory will prevent your screen from turning on. You will need to replace the memory. This link is our guide to replacing memory.
If the battery needs to be charged, the laptop won’t turn on. In this case, you will need to recharge your laptop.
Laptop is unresponsive to keyboard input.
If the laptop doesn’t respond to keyboard input, you may need to replace the keyboard, or use an external keyboard. You can use an external keyboard by plugging into a usb slot on the laptop.
If keys are missing, they can likely be replaced. Check if your keyboard manufacturer sells loose keys.
If your keys stick when pressed, they will need to be cleaned or replaced. Aim a can of compressed air underneath the key, and blow air in until the key stops sticking. Carefully remove any debris. Click here to visit our keyboard replacement guide.
Laptop gets extremely hot.
Check if the exhaust vents on the backplate are clogged with dust. If they are, you’ll need to clean them out with a can of compressed air.

Battery doesn’t charge, or doesn’t hold a charge.
If your laptop doesn’t respond to the charging cable, you may try a new charging cable before replacing the battery.
The charging port is dirty or clogged. In this case, you’ll have to clean out the port with a can of compressed air, or a toothpick.
The battery may no longer be capable of taking/holding a charge. In this case, you will need to replace the battery with a new one. You can replace your battery with our guide here.
The laptop takes a long time to open files and programs
Too many active processes will slow down your computer. Close all applications and browser tabs.
Hard drives become slower over time, and eventually need to be replaced. If you find that programs and files are taking a very long time to start, you probably need a new hard drive. Click here to view our hard drive replacement guide.
Active processes on your laptop compete for memory space, so if there’s not enough memory, things will slow down drastically. To fix this, you’ll need to buy more RAM, or purchase larger memory.
Laptop will not start, or randomly shuts down.
Computer viruses may cause unexpected problems with your laptop. To remove viruses, try booting from a live operating system disc, or run a virus scan.
