If your Chromebook displays the same image on the screen and is unresponsive.

A certain tab in the browser can be causing the Chromebook to freeze. A hard refresh could fix this problem by holding “Ctrl”, “Shift” and “R” simultaneously.

If your computer is not completely frozen but is running very slow, it could be caused by an app using too much CPU. Chrome task manager will shut down the apps that are causing this issue. Chrome task manager can be accessed by holding down the “shift” and “escape” keys simultaneously. When the chrome task manager opens there is a list of apps and the CPUs they are using. “Click end” process to close these apps.

The Chromebook may just need a hard reboot by turning it off and on. You can accomplish this by holding down the power button until off and then pressing it again to turn it back on.

If the above fixes do not work you can do a hard reset. Only proceed if it is okay that this process could potentially lose some of your files in the download folder. To hard reset your Chromebook, turn off your Chromebook, then hold the refresh button (curved arrow) and then tap the power button. Once your Chromebook turns back on you can release the refresh button.

If your Chromebook displays an error message when opening a particular file.

Ensure that your Chromebook supports the file type that you are attempting to open. The following file types are supported by Chromebooks:

  • Microsoft Office files: .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt (read-only), .pptx (read-only).Media: .3gp, .avi, .mov, .mp4, .m4v, .m4a, .mp3, .mkv, .ogv, .ogm, .ogg, .oga, .webm, .wavImages: .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .webpCompressed files: .zip, .rarOther: .txt, .pdf (read-only)

If the file type you are attempting to open is not supported by your Chromebook, try saving it to Google Drive and opening it from there. Documents, images, audio, and video files can be uploaded and saved to Google Drive, where you can create shared or private files to be opened in your browser.

If your Chromebook will not connect to or recognize a second monitor and the reason is unknown.

In many cases, your Chromebook will be able to recognize and connect to the external monitor following a reboot. This process requires you to turn the Chromebook off completely for a few seconds, and then power it back up. Repeat this reboot process with the external monitor in case the issue lies with it instead.

This Chromebook requires a USB to HDMI adapter cable to connect to an external device. Make sure that you acquire one of these adapters in order to connect your devices.

Connection of your Chromebook to an external monitor can be made difficult if the cables are not inserted properly. Ensure that each cable is inserted in the correct orientation and that there are no visible kinks in the cables.

It is possible that the cable and/or adapter being used to connect to the external monitor is faulty. Replacing this cable with a new one could solve this problem.

If the camera on your Chromebook is not working properly and the reason is unknown.

Your Chromebook may just need the newest update to fix the camera. Go to settings and select “About ChromeOS.” Then hit “Check for Updates” and install the newest update.

It may be possible that your Chromebook needs a hard reset to function properly. Do this by powering the Chromebook off completely for a few seconds allowing it to restart, and then power it back on.

It may be possible that the particular application you are attempting to use the camera on your device for is not supported. Check to see if this is the issue by opening up an alternative application and using the camera.

The audio on my Chromebook is distorted when I am using my headphones and not functioning correctly.

Firmly push the headphones into the headphone port until you hear a “clicking” noise. If headphones are not pushed in to the Chromebook securely, you will not be able to hear the audio.

Unplug the headphones from the Chromebook and close the Chromebook. Allow the Chromebook to be closed for at least ten seconds, then you may reopen the Chromebook. Plug headphones back into the Chromebook to see if closing the lid helped in audio distortion.

Locate your account picture which is found in the lower right corner of the screen surrounded by numerous icons. Once you click on the account picture, an information page will appear. Ensure that the audio is not mutated and adjust the volume to an appropriate level. Additionally, ensure that the audio output is at the desired location (ie, if you want the audio to channel through the headphones, click on the headphones output).

In many cases, audio distortion is due to not clearing the cache. To clear the cache, locate the ellipsis icon (3 vertical dots) in the top right corner of the Chromebook. Next, click on tools and locate the button that says “clear browsing data.” From here, click on the advanced option. The advanced option should present the viewer with many tasks that he or she would like to perform. To clear information from the beginning of time click the option “From beginning of time.” Lastly, click on the “empty the cache” option followed by “clear browsing data”. To test whether this worked, restart the Chromebook and test the audio.

Utilization of a different set of headphones will allow the user to know if the problem lies within the headphones or the Chromebook, itself. To correctly use a new pair of headphones, place the cord on the headphones into the headphone port until you hear a “clicking” noise
