Introduction

The stovetop gas burners worked fine so I know the range had gas. Also the broiler lit, although the broiler flame is hard to see.

I didn’t do this repair, but now I wish I had. I called the service technician. He looked at it for 1 minute and replaced the ‘Igniter’. It was an easy repair for him and cost me $400 including the service call and the $170 part. He said the igniter is a ‘wear-out’ part.

Before the technician replaced the igniter he did a test of the old one with a clamp-on Ammeter. He held in the door-closed switch at the top to test it. I didn’t see exactly what he checked, I wish I had, He told me that if the gas does not get lit within a few seconds then the gas supply is shut down for safety.

I see the genuine part is part AP5809118 available for $109 online.

I am writing this guide to help others to fix their own Bosch gas oven.

              Remove Oven Door - Cautions

Caution advice from my Bosch Owners Manual
Make sure oven is cool and power to the oven has been turned off before removing the door. Failure to do so could result in electrical shock or burns.
The oven door is heavy and parts of it are fragile. Use both hands to remove the oven door. The door front is glass. Handle carefully to avoid breakage.
Grasp only the sides of the oven door. Do not grasp the handle as it may swing in your hand and cause damage or injury.
Failure to grasp the oven door firmly and properly could result in personal injury or product damage.
To avoid injury from hinge bracket snapping closed, be sure that both levers are securely in place before removing the door. Also, do not force door open or closed—the hinge could be damaged and injury could result.
Do not lay removed door on sharp or pointed objects as this could break the glass. Lay on a flat, smooth surface, positioned so that the door cannot fall over.

Step 2

              Removing the Oven Door

Open the oven door to its fully open, horizontal position.
Flip levers on hinges toward you. Note: It may be necessary to use a tool, such as a screwdriver, to gently pry the upper part of the lever away from the housing. Take care to avoid scratching the housing.
Bring both door hinge levers to their fullest down position as shown in the illustration. The left and right door hinge levers may differ slightly but operate in the same manner.
Close the oven door until it catches on the hinge stop levers, locking the hinges at the proper angle for door removal. The door will be open about 7 inches at the top. This takes the spring tension off the hinges so the door can be easily lifted out.
The door is heavy. Use both hands to firmly grip it by the sides. Do not grip the door by the handle. Maintaining the door angle, lift the door straight up approximately 3/4" to unhook the hinges from the slots and then pull it out towards you until the hinges are clear of the oven housing.
Place the door in a convenient and stable location for cleaning.

              Remove Oven Racks

              Remove oven bottom panel

The oven gas burner and the igniter are under the panel at the bottom of the oven.
Remove the two screws at the back of the oven and pull up on the bottom panel to remove.
Set the panel aside.

Step 5

              Replace Igniter

The igniter is about 3-inches long, with two pre-stripped wires coming off it.
Remove the old igniter by removing the two holding screws, and disconnecting the wire-nuts that connect it.
Install the new igniter by reversing these directions.

I’ve worked on appliances for over 25 years. One thing you left out is that you could have put in a Frigidaire brand ignitor (part number 5303935066) and gotten the same results. A square ignitor is a square ignitor no matter the brand. The Frigidaire ignitor can be found online for $20 or less.
