- Computer architect who has made major contributions to the field of parallel computation, primarily in the area of high-speed, general purpose computer architecture.
- In December 2005, Smith was hired by Microsoft as a Technical Fellow. He worked with a variety of groups in the company to define and expand efforts in the areas of high-performance and parallel computing. From 1985 to 1988, Smith was a fellow of the Institute for Defense Analyses Supercomputing Research Center.
